Performance & discussion with Daina Ashbee & Tanya Lukin Linklater

 

Tanya Lukin Linklater originates from the Native Villages of Port Lions and Afognak in the Kodiak archipelago of southwestern Alaska. Based in northern Ontario, her practice spans experimental choreography, performance, installation, text, and video. Tanya’s works have been performed/exhibited at Images Festival + Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Toronto), VI Mostra Internacional de Videodanca Sao Carlos (Brasil), Open Space (Victoria), Museum of Contemporary Native Art (Santa Fe), Latitude 53’s Visualeyez (Edmonton), grunt gallery (Vancouver), Culver Center of the Arts (California), Expanse Movement Arts Festival (Edmonton), Near North Mobile Media Lab + White Water Gallery (Ontario), and TRIBE (Saskatoon). She studied at University of Alberta (M.Ed. 2003) and Stanford University (A.B. Honours 1998), where she received the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship & Louis Sudler Prize in Creative and Performing Arts. Tanya was awarded the Chalmers Professional Development Grant in 2010. She was nominated for the K.M. Hunter Artist Award in Dance in 2011 and received the K.M. Hunter Artist Award in Literature in 2013. She has collaborated with Duane Linklater on two projects: grain(s) in 2013 and Up River (2012). Her work has been generously supported by Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. In 2014 she will exhibit at SBC Gallery (Montreal), Urban Shaman (Winnipeg), and at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santiago.

Daina Ashbee is an artist, performer and choreographer born in British Columbia of Cree, Metis and Dutch descent. Her work is often influenced by her Aboriginal culture and her experiences as a young woman, using both contemporary and traditional means as expression. She has trained in dance, choreography and improvisation at Pacific Dance Arts Ballet Academy, Modus Operandi Vancouver Contemporary Dance Program and EDAM. She has created for InFrinGing Dance Festival, The Talking Stick Festival, Weesageechak Begins to Dance Festival and Dance Matters among many others. Daina has worked professionally as a dancer with Raven Spirit Dance Society, battery opera performance, Kokoro Dance Theatre, StarrWind Dance Projects, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Genevieve C. Ferron, Meaghan Oglivie and Rosy Simas Danse. Currently Daina's interest lies in 3 Dimensional artworks such as performance, installation and sculpture. She seeks to use and acknowledge the density and complexity of the human structure by exploring it's innards, thought processes, energy and capacity for life. She is looking forward to the completion of her first full length ensemble dance work, Unrelated in the summer of 2014 with mentorship or residencies at both MAI (Montreal, Arts Interculturels) and Studio 303 in Montreal, Quebec.
