Call for Proposals

Deadline June 10, 2018, 11:59pm

submit to: projet@sbcgallery.ca

Start date October 1, 2018

SBC is thrilled to open a call for applicants for a curatorial residency at the gallery, to take place from October 2018 through December 2019.

This call is open to curators or artists/curatorial collectives who wish to develop and implement a rigorous and experimental one-year programme of exhibitions and other cultural events as Curator(s)-in-Residence at SBC. Practitioners with significant experience in organizational and programming activities in the field of art and wider cultural practices will be considered.

Following a three-month in-house development period (October – December 2018) with SBC’s Artistic Co-Director, the successful applicant(s) will have the opportunity to programme exhibitions and events, workshops and public engagement for a year, beginning in January 2019.

We encourage submissions from practitioners who demonstrate a sustained commitment to the advancement of social justice in their work. We encourage programming that holds anti-colonial practices, collective practices and pedagogical practices as fields of action; that centers methodologies of shared accountability and care; and that actively resists inherited colonial legacies, systemic racism and gender discrimination. Reflections on institutional responsibility and accountability are encouraged.

The Residency is open to local, national and international candidates.

International candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada with appropriate visas/work permits at the time of application.

SBC will provide:

  • A budget sufficient for a year of programming. SBC aims to produce ambitious programming within our modest scales of production, and we encourage candidates’ proposals to have a similar approach. SBC’s base annual programming budget is CDN $40,000;

  • a stipend totaling CDN $50,000.

The Curator(s) in Residence will receive support from SBC’s Co-Director, Admin, as well as Board Members for administrative support and budget management; support from SBC’s two part-time staff, the Exhibitions and Communications Coordinator and Head of Public Programming and Outreach for exhibitions & events coordination, public outreach and communications; and support from SBC’s Artistic Co-Director and the Curatorial Advisory Committee for general programming consultation.

Please note that housing and travel to Tiohtià:ke/Montréal will be the responsibility of the incoming Curator(s)-in-Residence. SBC will help out with housing listings, etc where possible.

The Curator(s)-in-Residence will:

  • reside in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal for the year and oversee all aspects of exhibitions and events including communications, education and outreach. (These areas should be integrated into the applicant’s proposal.)

  • be actively present in the day-to-day activities of the gallery, working closely with SBC’s team.

  • be fluent in French and/or English. Given the multi-lingual context of Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, knowledge of a second language, including non-colonial languages, is a plus. Basic language support can be provided if/as needed.

There will be a two-stage process for review of submissions:

STAGE 1: Please submit the following to projet@sbcgallery.ca by 23:59 EDT, June 10, 2018, keeping SBC’s mandate and mission statement in mind https://www.sbcgallery.ca/information:

  • A letter, no longer than 1500 words, explaining your relevant experience and your interest in being Curator(s)-in-Residence at SBC Gallery for the year. Describe the overarching guiding principles and working processes of your curatorial practice. Include one concrete example of how you would put those principles to work at SBC.

  • A short-form CV.

You should receive an automated notification of receipt of your submission. Please note that only candidates invited to proceed to STAGE 2 will be personally contacted.

STAGE 2: Candidates invited to proceed to the second stage of review will be contacted by June 18. Invited candidates will receive a $500 honorarium to expand on your proposals and to prepare a presentation for discussion with the review committee:

  • This second stage project proposal should include a general outline of your concept, working processes and guiding principles for the year’s programme of exhibitions, events and outreach. You should give an indication of the artists and other collaborators you propose to work with, even if a partial or working list. The project proposal should be no more than 3000 words and should include a time-line, even if tentative.

  • A discussion with the review committee will follow. Those not residing in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal will meet with the committee remotely via teleconference. The review committee consists of Pip Day (SBC’s Co-Director, Artistic), SBC’s Curatorial Advisory Committee including Kim Simon (Curator, TPW Gallery, Toronto) and Pablo Lafuente (Education Coordinator, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro) as well as cheyanne turions (Director of Education and Public Programmes, Vancouver Art Gallery) and Robin Simpson (Public Programs and Education, Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery).

  • Deadline to submit expanded proposal (for invited candidates): July 6, 2018

  • Interviews for invited candidates to take place the week of July 16, 2018
