McCord Museum

690 Sherbrooke Street West

(Admission is free - limited seating)

Presented in conjunction with the current exhibition Judging Books by Their Covers, SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to present a lecture by internationally renowned artist Martha Rosler. Working in photography, video, sculpture, performance and installation, Rosler’s work in the public sphere ranges from everyday life - often with an eye to women’s experience - and the media to architecture and the built environment. She has long made work adressing war and the national security climate.

Rosler’s lecture will examine her project The Martha Rosler Library within the context of her larger practice. This unique personal collection of approximately 7,700 books first opened in 2005 (in exhibition form) as a store-front reading room for the New York based arts project e-flux. The installation toured widely from 2005 to 2009 visiting The Frankfurter Kunstverein in Germany, Antwerp’s Muhka (Museum of Contemporary Art), the United Nations Plaza school in Berlin, the Institut National de L’Histoire de L’Art in Paris, John Moore’s University, Liverpool, Stills in Edinburgh and the Herter Gallery at the University of Massachusetts.

Rosler was included in the 2011 Istanbul and Singapore biennales while GAM, Turin, hosted a retrospective exhibition of her work in 2010. Recent solo exhibitions include the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2005), Portikus, Frankfurt (2008) and La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona (2010).

SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art wishes to thank the Canada Council for the Arts, the ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine, the Conseil des arts de Montréal, and the McCord Museum for generously providing the venue for this event.
