Two new appointments



SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Pip Day to the position of Director and Curator and Ms. Nicole Doucet to the position of Development and Management Consultant.



"I am delighted to announce these two appointments" said Mathieu Bouchard, President of the Board of Directors of the Gallery. "Since its founding in 2007, SBC has been working towards positioning itself as a leading contemporary art gallery. With these appointments, we have assembled a team that makes it possible for the Gallery to realize this objective. Pip brings an international perspective to SBC," Bouchard added, "while possessing the necessary leadership skills, curatorial expertise and arts management background necessary to achieve our goals."



"I am thrilled to be returning to my native Montreal" added Pip. " I'm particularly excited about the city's dynamic cultural panorma, and about the important work being done in the arts around contemporary cultural, social and political matters."



Currently based in Mexico City, Pip has worked as a curator, writer, educator and lecturer. Some of her recent Mexico City-based projects include a six-month curatorial workshop, Making Things Public (2010), the conference Not I: encuentro sobre arte y política (2011) and the three-month workshop and performance series Spatial Practices in Revolution (2011). Curated exhibitions include the upcoming Sucursal (2012) and Not I: The Performative Speech Act and the Sovereign Subject for which she received an Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Curatorial Research Fellowship in 2011.

Pip holds a B.A. in Art History from the University of Toronto and an M.A. in Curatorial Studies from Bard College. In the late 1990s, she worked as Curator at Artists Space in New York and has been curating independently since 1999. Among her previous exhibitions are Studio Voltaire (London, 2006), Zero (Mexico City, 2002, 2004 and Guadalajara, 2005), Nostalgia (New York, 2002) and Residue (Vienna, 2000). Pip established and directed Teratoma's curatorial studies and residency programs in Mexico City between 2002 and 2006 and in 2011 founded el instituto, a not-for-profit organization focused on research, culture, activism and human rights theory and practice.



Pip has published extensively in journals including: Afterall, Art Review, Untitled (London); Celeste (Mexico) and Photography Quarterly (New York). She has taught in the graduate curatorial program at Bard as well as at Goldsmith's College (London) and lectured at Parsons, (New York), the Royal College of Art, (London) and The Temple Bar (Dublin). Pip is currently a PhD candidate at the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmith's College, University of London.



Nicole Doucet has devoted her entire professional life to the arts. She served as Director of Arts Disciplines at the Canada Council for the Arts from 2008-2011 where she was responsible for managing the development and operation of the Canada Council's grant programs. Between 2005 and 2008, she was the Director of Music and Dance at the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and between 2002 and 2005, she also served a CALQ post as the Director of Theatre, Multidisciplinary Arts and Circus Arts. Before arriving at the CALQ in 2002, Nicole, who holds a Bachelor degree in visual arts from the University of Ottawa, spent nearly 10 years managing La Maison Théâtre, a Montreal-based association aimed at presenting and promoting theatre for young audiences. "We are delighted that Nicole has decided to join our team", said Bouchard. "Her extensive knowledge and decades of experience will be a tremendous asset to SBC."
