SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to invite you to BEST BY DATE — a two-part gathering marking the culmination of Beau Gomez’s artist residency.

Pt. 1
(5:30 PM – 6:30 PM EST)

Poetry Reading & In-Conversation with Lx Jerry
(In person and via Zoom)

Beau Gomez will be joined by Lx Jerry, an HIV-positive writer and poet based in Puebla, Mexico, for a conversation on creative lyricism and their collaboration on the film Filament Fortune. The discussion will be preceded by a live poetry reading courtesy of La Jerry.

Pt. 2
(6:30 PM – 8:30 PM)

Residency Public Presentation + Reception

We invite you to discover Best Before, Beau’s new project developed during their residency at SBC. This investigative and deeply personal work explores—and questions—desire, disclosure, and otherness.

ABOUT

Gerardx. Lx Jerry, born and raised in Juchitán, Mexico, is a Muxe poetrist who embraces their seropositivity and queerness with playfulness and love. Through writing that centres (self-)representation, they reflect on their experience as a brown, queer, HIV-positive body. Their words emerge from lived experience and seek to heal wounds inflicted by a world more accustomed to rejection than acceptance.

BEAU GOMEZ

Beau Gomez is a visual artist whose practice is informed by ideas, challenges and conversations around cross-cultural narratives as they relate to positions of community and otherness. His work is grounded in image-making and storytelling as vehicles for illustrating or embodying memory, and as operative points of tension and affect. He has exhibited in Canada and internationally, including Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, Queer East, Centre de la photographie Genève, Trinity Square Video, Toronto International Film Festival, Princeton University Art Museum and The Visual AIDS Foundation.
