The Pôle artistique 4001!
At SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art, we are very excited to share some thrilling news about the future of our space: SBC is officially joining the upcoming Pôle artistique 4001!
4001 Berri: An inclusive, essential arts ecosystem in Montréal
Montréal, Wednesday, May 14, 2025 – A unique cultural venue in the heart of Plateau-Mont-Royal, 4001 Berri is establishing itself as a key space for creation, presentation, and collaboration in the visual, digital, and media arts in Montréal. This collective brings together five recognized arts organizations – OBORO, Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV), Ada X, SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art (currently located at the Belgo, 372 Sainte-Catherine Street), and Turbine – all united by a shared vision: to make art accessible to everyone, in an open and inclusive space. This collaborative project aims to offer a vibrant site of creation, presentation, and learning to artists and audiences from all backgrounds. More than just a building, 4001 Berri came into being in 2023 through a foundational action: removing the property from speculative real estate pressures in order to preserve this landmark of contemporary art.
This collaborative initiative goes far beyond real estate preservation. It aims to strengthen the five organizations by pooling their resources and expertise, while building a new, agile, and resilient organizational model. Co-ownership will allow them to solidify their missions and expand their impact on both artists and the public by providing affordable spaces, increased production support, and rich, public-facing programming.
One Place, One Vision, One Impact
4001 Berri means:
-
170 activities per year, including exhibitions, screenings, performances, outreach projects, training sessions, artist and curator residencies, production support, distribution, publications, and more;
-
22,000 visitors annually, drawn by inclusive, innovative, and dynamic programming;
-
543 artists supported annually, through shared resources and tailored support for media, visual, digital, and video arts practices.
At the core of this cultural energy is the leadership of the directors of the five partner organizations and a solidarity-based governance model rooted in values of equity, sustainability, and social justice. The goal is to bring together all partners, audiences, and other arts groups within the 27,000-square-foot space of 4001 Berri, establishing it as a cultural catalyst in the heart of Montréal.
An Innovative, Sustainable Model
In response to inflationary pressures that are weakening arts organizations, and the growing threat to creative spaces in Montréal, 4001 Berri is implementing an innovative strategy by adopting a new co-ownership model. This approach makes it possible to sustainably manage fixed costs and strengthen the financial stability of its members. By pooling diverse expertise, 4001 Berri shares space, equipment, and services—providing a tangible solution to the persistent precarity in the arts and culture sector. This unprecedented collaboration is building a unique model of resilience, social innovation, and artistic synergy with both local and international impact. Strong government support is essential to anchor this new model and ensure its long-term sustainability.
“More than just a building, 4001 Berri is a catalyst for social transformation. It’s a vibrant space that promotes access to art, diversity of voices, and the emergence of new creative expressions,” say the directors of the collective. “It is vital that government bodies recognize the importance of supporting projects like ours, which foster the democratization of culture and the development of local arts.”

Although SBC is an integral part of the project, we are not yet physically located at 4001 Berri. The gallery is currently continuing its operations at the Belgo Building, while awaiting the completion of renovations and the necessary permits for its eventual relocation. As a member of our community, we will keep you informed of progress and share updates as soon as the time comes to move into our new gallery space!
