On the occasion of the Nuit Blanche in Montreal
For the 16th edition of Nuit blanche à Montréal, SBC Gallery is proud to present a performance by Kahnawake-born, Montreal / Toronto based interdisciplinary artist Walter Scott, entitled Wendy Goes to Hell. Join us on Saturday March 2, 2019 from 8pm to 2am.
Wendy is the “perennially perturbed” protagonist of Scott’s well-known comics, published online and in print since 2011. Wendy’s tales are fueled by the youth’s anxious expectations of a bright future. In the Wendy-verse, parties, relationships, drunken mistakes and drama both heavy and frivolous continuously reroute the path to success. As we witness Wendy’s many setbacks, Scott questions our naive understanding of self-care/self-improvement and the dumbfounding moment when we realize the foreseeable future is determined by our pre-existing circumstances. Wendy’s satire encourages us to laugh at our vulnerable selves while weighing in on questions of privilege, racial and social identity and self-awareness.
For Nuit Blanche à Montréal at SBC, Scott will perform a live reading of his well-known comic strip, Wendy. Wendy Goes to Hell is a multimedia performance featuring live actors, visuals and sound. In Hell, Ontario, Wendy faces her greatest challenge yet - graduate art school. Inspired by his time at the University of Guelph, the performance will preview currently unreleased material from the next Wendy graphic novel.
