November 29, 2025 - 2pm-4pm
Free, registration required rsvp@sbcgallery.ca
Event in English
at SBC Gallery
Jardin Papillon will lead a natural dye workshop using plant materials harvested from their garden. Working with dyer’s cosmos, marigold and buckthorn, we will experiment with basic dyeing techniques as well as being presented with some more advanced ones. Participants may choose to give swatches from the workshop to go towards a collective textile piece. All materials are provided. Wear clothing you don't mind staining.
This event is part of the program Everything Still Resonates
Co-created by SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art with Colectiva Polea, the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Intellectual Traditions and Self-Determination, and the Laboratory for Decolonial Art and Research (LabARD), this program brings together Indigenous, diasporic, and settler voices proposing alternatives to socio-ecological crises and sharing tools for healing, transformation, and resistance. From November 27 to December 12, workshops, gatherings, and performances invite participants to imagine new ways of making together.
PARTNERS
Jardin Papillon Teinture was founded as an artist collective dedicated to merging artistic expression with environmental stewardship and community engagement. Situated in Montreal’s Chabanel district, a historically significant hub of textile industry, our collective reimagines this legacy by cultivating a natural dye garden—linking the area’s industrial past to sustainable artistic practices. Our mandate is to provide a platform for both emerging and established artists to explore and express their creativity through environmentally conscious methods. By offering workshops, events, and educational programs, we aim to foster a sense of belonging, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility, creating a space where art, nature, and community converge. Representing the garden: Nicole Burton (head gardener), Nick Howe (founder) and Abby Maxwell (head dyer).
