Vibrating to the percussive rhythms of berimbaus and tambourines, for the 13th edition of Nuit blanche à Montréal, SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art will transform itself into a roda of the dance and combat martial art capoeira. Drawing on Afro-Brazilian traditions, music and performance will animate the objects and sculptures scattered throughout the exhibition space. Visitors will be invited to add to the evening’s festivities by collectively composing accessories from “chita,” a popular floral fabric from the Northeast of Brazil.

 

The Textile Lab, led by fuxico sewing expert and milliner Flavia Monteiro, will offer guests the opportunity to learn techniques of this handicraft by recycling offcuts of the chita fabric used to cover the gallery’s walls. The fuxico creations will then be incorporated into the movements of the dancers from the Grupo de Capoeira Semente do Jogo de Angola.

 

The event is presented as part of the exhibition Sans peau / No Skin, a collective project by Ines Doujak, Pablo Lafuente and Alessandro Marques, which adopts as a starting point the image of the jellyfish (“água viva“) to explore how bodies may live and move within a space where borders, such as skin, no longer exist.
