Observations Part 1
NOVEMBER 5 to DECEMBER 13, 2008
The SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to present the exhibition Observations, curated by Nicole Gingras, who is widely recognized for her research into still and moving images and sound art practices. The exhibition, which is made up of two complementary components, brings together recent works by five Quebec artists and one artist from the Netherlands. Most of these works are being shown for the first time.

“Observations is an exhibition on the scope of vision and various forms of introspection. The concept of observation is addressed in this exhibition from a perspective of movement: the movement of gaze, of thought, of memory, of body, and of reality. The exhibition focuses on works by artists absorbed by the transformation of an image, whether triggered by a memory, emotion, experience, place, intimate or personal object, or familiar landscape. Bringing together videographic and kinetic works, Observations takes an indirect approach to drawing and the pictorial codes of portrait, still life and landscape genres, without neglecting the role played by sound and silence.” -Nicole Gingras
Parallel to the exhibition, on Thursday, November 6, at 12:30 p.m., van Breest / Smallenburg will discuss her practice as part of the ICI conference program (Intervenants culturels internationaux) at École des arts visuels et médiatiques of the Université du Québec à Montréal, Room RM-130.
The public will also have a chance to meet Olivia Boudreau, Jean-Pierre Gauthier and Nicole Gingras at the SBC Gallery on Saturday, December 6, at 3:00 p.m.
