SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art is a non-profit exhibition centre and public gallery in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, dedicated to providing a forum for artists, curators and cultural practitioners for projects that critically engage with current issues in art, culture and society.

 

SBC’s collaborative approach to cultural production runs through our distinct programme of exhibitions, events, research, public outreach activities and publications. We embrace different ways of making - making objects, making relations, making politics, making publics -, to build relationships between practitioners, publics and institutions in order to foster a diverse and complex community.

 

Job Description

 

We are currently seeking a dynamic, highly organised individual to join our growing team as Exhibitions & Communications Coordinator.

 

Working closely with the Director/Curator, the Exhibitions & Communications Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the gallery’s programming and for coordinating the gallery’s communications strategy.

 

This is a 4 days per week position.

 

Main Responsibilities:

 

Coordinate all aspects of the gallery's artistic programming (exhibitions, events, launches, workshops, conferences, symposiums and publications), including:

 

  • prepare production schedules for each exhibition;

  • correspond with artists, guest curators and gallerists;

  • coordinate installation and de-installation of exhibitions;

  • manage technical and other exhibition requirements, sourcing material, equipment, services and supplies;

  • organise openings, launches and events;

  • organise travel and stay for curators and artists;

  • arrange shipping of artworks;

  • secure insurance for artworks;

  • prepare condition reports for artworks;

  • supervise occasional contractuals hired in relation to exhibitions, such as technicians;

  • welcome visitors, respond to inquiries and offer guided tours;

  • open and close the gallery.

 

Supervise all aspects of the gallery’s communications strategy:

 

  • The Exhibitions & Communications Coordinator will work closely with the Director/Curator as well as the Communications Assistant and will manage the communications plan for key events of SBC’s programming, including exhibitions, conferences, screenings, educational programs and fundraising events;

  • ensure communications materials are produced within timelines;

  • edit and proofread web content, press material and publications;

  • oversee graphic design for invitation cards, press release, floor plans and other auxiliary documents, as well as the signage and visuals for the website;

  • contribute in the writing of press releases and any materials used to promote exhibitions, publications and other events, including a seasonal programming newsletter;

  • manage and cultivate relationships with media;

  • coordinate occasional in-house or contracting out of translations of gallery materials.

 

The Exhibitions & Communications Coordinator will also work closely with the Director/Curator on developing and coordinating SBC’s exhibitions and communications internship program, with an eye to providing relevant learning opportunities for interns.

 

SBC’s team is small and all members of staff are occasionally expected to contribute to other tasks.

 

Minimum requirements for the position:

 

Have at least 3 years of experience coordinating or managing exhibitions and artistic events, as well as experience in the field of communications.

 

Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, excellent knowledge of social networks, technologies related to the production of online and printed communications material.

 

Excellent knowledge of French and English, written and spoken.

 

Knowledge of contemporary art and culture and emerging practices.

 

The candidate must:

  • be organised, industrious, thorough and a team player. They will be self-motivated, work well under pressure, have a high attention to detail and be able to handle several projects at one time.

  • have excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills; excellent oral communication.

  • have demonstrated the ability to write clearly and persuasively. 

  • work well in multicultural teams and with diverse constituencies.

  • have in-depth knowledge of social media tools.

  • be available for occasional after-hours events.

 

Salary

 

This is a part-time, 28 hour per week position with starting salary of $28,000 per annum.
