CURATOR IN RESIDENCE 2013-2014

SBC Gallery welcomes cheyanne turions

Canada Arts Council Aboriginal Curatorial Resident

SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art is very pleased to announce that we will be working with Canada Arts Council Aboriginal Curator for Residencies in the Visual Arts grant recipient cheyanne turions from July 2013 to June 2014.

cheyanne turions is an independent Toronto-based curator and writer. She will be working with Pip Day, SBC Gallery’s Director/Curator “to think through what sovereignty means in Canada, in Québec, in a gallery, from [her] specific subject position … in a country with a deep history of colonization”.

Her research will explore the potentials of the gallery space as a laboratory for living research and will place politically and socially engaged art at its core, specifically the sovereign self, civic responsibility and individual agency. Recent events and cultural developments such as Idle No More and its Sovereignty Summer are points of departure for her exploration of “the widespread emergence of artists who address current and historical civic challenges to systems of governance”.

cheyanne turions’ theoretical and methodological approach to curating particularly focus on pedagogy’s relationship to art and curatorial practices. In Toronto, she coordinates the No Reading After the Internet series, an alternative learning space that aims to reforming publics and experimenting with the act of reading.

Approaching the subject from a wide range of cultural, academic, institutional, geo-political and judicial perspectives, SBC’s 2012-2014 program on Sovereignty brings together artists and other interdisciplinary practitioners from around the globe to develop exhibitions, workshops, screenings, conferences, publications and events for sustained discussion around the subject.
