The SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art presents Anne Ramsden – La collection et le quotidien, an exhibition curated by Marie Perrault and circulated by the Musée régional de Rimouski. Brought together for the first time in Montreal, Ramsden’s works Possession (1996-1997), Patina (1998), and Museum of the Everyday (2005 to present) provide us with unique insight into the work of the artist and her examination of the often insidious aspects of contemporary visual culture in our day-to-day lives.



 

In La collection et le quotidien, Ramsden appropriates and combines the representational codes present in advertising, the media and museums and incorporates them into her own artistic tools. The artist isolates everyday objects, the actions generated through their repetitive use, and commonplace images of diverse cultures found on the Web, altering their manner of presentation. By transposing and accumulating these objects, modified for exhibition purposes, Ramsden constructs a visual language and social environment that challenges our customary views of everyday life.



This incursion into strategies manipulated by the media, into Internet image banks, and into the machinery that drives museums has long defined Ramsden’s interest in the day-to-day. Marie Perrault has selected a discerning set of works and presents a thoughtful analysis of the artist’s work in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition.



 

Anne Ramsden was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and now lives and works in Montreal. Since the early 1980s, she has exhibited her works in recognized museums and as part of public art initiatives. Today she also incorporates the Web as both a distribution medium and source.
